For less than three hundred dollars, you can now get a ten inch Acer computer, one with a sizable hard drive and a very workable screen size and keyboard size, that will easily fit in a large purse and is light and portable enough to take with you basically everywhere.
If you are a person that works largely from your computer, and especially if you take your computer back and forth between your home and your office, lightness and portablity can be key factors in your laptop decision.
Headphones, external speakers and upgraded CD and DVD drives are used by many people who frequently use their computers for entertainment purposes. These are definitely optional items, but they can be used to enrich your multimedia experience with your laptop or notebook computer.
A secondary monitor should also be considered if your small laptop screen limits your productivity or if you would like to employ the use of a dual monitor setup. This is especially true for ultra-portable and very lightweight models that are equipped with small displays to minimize their overall space and weight. Laptop and notebook PCs are usually equipped with a video port to connect an external monitor. The settings to adjust the display’s properties and your intended use (single or dual monitor setup) are configured in your operating system’s graphic’s display utility or control panel.
Now that I have the Acer ten inch laptop, I simply zip it into its padded cover and slip it into my purse. If I’m planning to use it for a long time while I’m out, I will bring the bag that I have which contains the power cord and my wireless mouse, as well. Those don’t take up very much room, either. Everything together is so light that I barely even notice the difference in weight in my purse!
There is a definite appeal in gaming for learning using mobile phones. Currently, several companies are experimenting with game-based learning technology for mobiles. However, the feasibility of such an approach depends on the cost of development and deployment of such applications, which are quite high at this time. With increasingly capable hardware and connectivity available and dropping costs, it’s only a matter of time before learning games on mobile become commonplace.
In the future, we will see mobile phones, computers and various other computing/media devices (iPods, Digital Cameras, PDAs, etc.) we use converge into a single personal mobile computing device. At such a time, the differentiation between eLearning and mLearning will cease to exist; all learning will be electronic and mobile
